Girl Germs, named after one of the original Riot Grrrl zines, is a special session for feminists of all ages on Saturday 13 September starting at 2 PM and ending with a screening of The Punk Singer from 4-6pm! At GOFF we’re all about the girl gang and that includes our teen dreamers, who are warmly invited! Or maybe Riot Grrrl was a special time and place for you, and you wanna revisit? Well, babes, memory lane is open!
There’ll be live performances from the incredibly cool , , and , who will all tell you something about how they started a band and their experience as a girl in the music scene. We’ll also have zine workshops from , A Zine Thing and Sticky Institute, DJing lessons, cosplayers, a unisex nail bar (Nailed It), and a special clubhouse called Wannabe, where you can talk to a bunch of babes what what you really wannabe.
Our “Wannabes” include writers like Amy Gray and Kat Muscat, and Anna Barnes, and broadcasters like Claudia Long (SYN), GOFF’s own Tara Judah (JOY, RRR), and Fairy GOFFmother Cerise Howard. You might wannabe a screenwriter or filmmaker, like Fairy GOFFmother Sarah-Jane Woulahan, or a video game designer like Leena van Deventer of WIDGET, a physicist and mathematician like Catriona WImberley or an inventor like , an activist like the gang at , a journalist/editor/photographer like Screen Education’s Greta Parry, or like another Fairy GOFFmother Nakkiah Lui, make and star in your own TV show! They’ll all be there hanging out and talking feminism with a brand new gang.
The whole event will be hosted by our gorgeous Fairy GOFFmother Anna Barnes, bringing her special magic to a sesh that includes an all-ages screening of The Punk Singer, an amazing documentary about the hero of Riot Grrrl, Kathleen Hanna. Last year Anna hosted the one and only Tavi Gevinson at MWF’s Rookie Day celebrations so we’ll crush on both of them by osmosis at Girl Germs, okay?
We’re so incredibly excited at GOFF HQ because all we want is for feminists of every age to feel like there are lots of us, that there are fun and amazing things happening, that we can fight our fight and party hardy, that activism is more than just megaphones and barricades, and that we’re all in this together. Girl Germs is gonna be such a kick and we can’t wait to meet y’all at GOFF this September!
This is a unisex, all-ages event, with a special emphasis on young feminists.
(Tickets to The Punk Singer are also for sale separately.)
